What are GLP-1 & GIP agonists?
GLP-1s include brand name medications like Ozempic & Wegovy as well as compounded Semaglutide. Tirzepatide, also known by the brand name Mounjaro is additionally a GIP & GLP-1 agonist combo. These are naturally occurring hormones found in your gut that regulate your digestion and appetite. In short, they can help you feel full faster by slowing gastric emptying, and stay full longer. This results in less calories consumed, better blood glucose regulation, and weight lost.
The effects typically begin within two-three weeks of starting treatment.
Your current weight, goals, and situation will determine how long you will need to take the medication. Many providers are still not sure what the maintenance of your weight loss results will look like when it comes to these medications. For those that have a situational, more short term weight gain (life events like postpartum weight, stopping smoking, death in the family, or other life stressors) it may be likely that you will be able to eventually titrate down and come off medication when you make the proper lifestyle changes. For others, for which obesity has been a chronic problem over their lifetime due to genetics, diabetes, menopause, etc, this may not be possible, and you may always require a small regular dose indefinitely or need to transition to another medication to for maintenance.
Side effects are mild and usually go away within a few weeks of starting treatment once your body adjust to the medication. Most common are nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and heartburn. They can be managed with over the counter medications, increase oral hydration, and occasionally another prescription for anti nausea medication.
How is it administered?
The medication is administered with a once weekly, almost painless, subcutaneous injection with a very small needle.
